Saturn Mahadasha: What It Does to Your Life and How to Get Through It

In the Chandogya Upanishad there is a boy named Satyakama.

He wanted to study. The teacher asked for his lineage. His father's name, his family line. Satyakama did not know. He went home and asked his mother.

She told him the truth. She had worked in many houses when she was young. She could not say who his father was.

Satyakama went back to the teacher and said exactly that.

The teacher was quiet for a moment. Then he said: a boy who speaks like that is a brahmin. Come in.

He gave Satyakama four hundred thin cattle and pointed toward the forest. Come back when they are a thousand. That was all. No lessons. No schedule. No date of return.

Satyakama took the cattle and went.

He did not ask when he would be done. He moved the cattle to water, to grass, and back again. He did the work. The years passed and he did not count them.

When the herd reached a thousand, the teaching began to arrive. A bull spoke to him and told him something about the nature of all things. Then a fire spoke. Then a swan came down and taught him more. Then a diving bird. None of them were asked. They came because he was ready. By the time he walked back to the ashram, the knowledge was complete.

The teacher saw him coming down the path. He said: you have the face of someone who has understood something. Who taught you?

Satyakama said: not a person.

Saturn Mahadasha is the same kind of forest.

It lasts 19 years. It gives no graduation date, no map, no shortcut. The teaching that comes from it does not come from a book. It comes from the years, from the work done when no one is watching.

What the period does
